Surah

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
A. L. M.
(This is) the Revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt,- from the Lord of the Worlds.
Or do they say, “He has forged it”? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance.
It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition?
He rules (all) affairs from the heavens to the earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day, the space whereof will be (as) a thousand years of your reckoning.
Such is He, the Knower of all things, hidden and open, the Exalted (in power), the Merciful;-
He Who has made everything which He has created most good: He began the creation of man with (nothing more than) clay,
And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised:
But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give!
And they say: “What! when we lie, hidden and lost, in the earth, shall we indeed be in a Creation renewed? Nay, they deny the Meeting with their Lord.
Say: “The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: then shall ye be brought back to your Lord.”
If only thou couldst see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord, (saying:) “Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: Now then send us back (to the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe.”
If We had so willed, We could certainly have brought every soul its true guidance: but the Word from Me will come true, “I will fill Hell with Jinns and men all together.”
“Taste ye then – for ye forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours, and We too will forget you – taste ye the Penalty of Eternity for your (evil) deeds!”
Only those believe in Our Signs, who, when they are recited to them, fall down in prostration, and celebrate the praises of their Lord, nor are they (ever) puffed up with pride.
Their limbs do forsake their beds of sleep, the while they call on their Lord, in Fear and Hope: and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on them.
Now no person knows what delights of the eye are kept hidden (in reserve) for them – as a reward for their (good) deeds.
Is then the man who believes no better than the man who is rebellious and wicked? Not equal are they.
For those who believe and do righteous deeds are Gardens as hospitable homes, for their (good) deeds.
As to those who are rebellious and wicked, their abode will be the Fire: every time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be forced thereinto, and it will be said to them: “Taste ye the Penalty of the Fire, the which ye were wont to reject as false.”
And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.
And who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord, and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (due) Retribution.
We did indeed aforetime give the Book to Moses: be not then in doubt of its reaching (thee): and We made it a guide to the Children of Israel.
And We appointed, from among them, leaders, giving guidance under Our command, so long as they persevered with patience and continued to have faith in Our Signs.
Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment, in the matters wherein they differ (among themselves)
Does it not teach them a lesson, how many generations We destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they (now) go to and fro? Verily in that are Signs: Do they not then listen?
And do they not see that We do drive rain to parched soil (bare of herbage), and produce therewith crops, providing food for their cattle and themselves? Have they not the vision?
They say: “When will this decision be, if ye are telling the truth?”
Say: “On the Day of Decision, no profit will it be to Unbelievers if they (then) believe! nor will they be granted a respite.”
So turn away from them, and wait: they too are waiting.

Surah al-Mulk

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Blessed be He in Whose hands is Dominion; and He over all things hath Power;-
He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving;-
He Who created the seven heavens one above another: No want of proportion wilt thou see in the Creation of (Allah) Most Gracious. So turn thy vision again: sees thou any flaw?
Again turn thy vision a second time: (thy) vision will come back to thee dull and discomfited, in a state worn out.
And we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire.
For those who reject their Lord (and Cherisher) is the Penalty of Hell: and evil is (such), Destination.
When they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath even as it blazes forth,
Almost bursting with fury: Every time a Group is cast therein, its Keepers will ask, “Did no Warner come to you?”
They will say: “Yes indeed; a Warner did come to us, but we rejected him and said, Allah never sent down any (Message): ye are nothing but an egregious delusion!”
They will further say: “Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we should not (now) be among the Companions of the Blazing Fire!”
They will then confess their sins: but far will be (Forgiveness) from the Companions of the Blazing Fire!
As for those who fear their Lord unseen, for them is Forgiveness and a great Reward.
And whether ye hide your word or publish it, He certainly has (full) knowledge, of the secrets of (all) hearts.
Should He not know,- He that created? and He is the One that understands the finest mysteries (and) is well-acquainted (with them).
It is He Who has made the earth manageable for you, so traverse ye through its tracts and enjoy of the Sustenance which He furnishes: but unto Him is the Resurrection.
Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?
Or do ye feel secure that He Who is in Heaven will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones), so that ye shall know how (terrible) was My warning?
But indeed men before them rejected (My warning): then how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)?
Do they not observe the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them in? None can uphold them except (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly (Allah) Most Gracious: Truly it is He that watches over all things.
Nay, who is there that can help you, (even as) an army, besides (Allah) Most Merciful? In nothing but delusion are the Unbelievers.
Or who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision? Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth).
Is then one who walks headlong, with his face groveling, better guided,- or one who walks evenly on a Straight Way?
Say: “It is He Who has created you (and made you grow), and made for you the faculties of hearing, seeing, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give.
Say: “It is He Who has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered together.”
They ask: When will this promise be (fulfilled)? – If ye are telling the truth.
Say: “As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone: I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public.”
At length, when they see it close at hand, grieved will be the faces of the Unbelievers, and it will be said (to them): “This is (the promise fulfilled), which ye were calling for!”
Say: “See ye?- If Allah were to destroy me, and those with me, or if He bestows His Mercy on us,- yet who can deliver the Unbelievers from a grievous Penalty?”
Say: “He is (Allah) Most Gracious: We have believed in Him, and on Him have we put our trust: So, soon will ye know which (of us) it is that is in manifest error.”
Say: “See ye?- If your stream be some morning lost (in the underground earth), who then can supply you with clear-flowing water?”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited [the above two Sūrahs]. (Tirmidhī 3404)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A Sūrah from the Qur’ān containing 30 verses will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is Sūrah al-Mulk.” (Tirmidhī 2891)

‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that whoever reads Sūrah al-Mulk every night, Allah will protect him from the punishment of the grave. He said: “At the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to call it ‘al-māni‘ah’ (the protector). Indeed there is a Sūrah in the Book of Allah [i.e. this Sūrah]; whoever recites it every night has done very well.” (Nasā’ī in ‘Amal al-Yawm wal-Laylah 711)

Ayat al-Kursi

Allāhu lā ilāha illā Huwa-l-Ḥayyu-l-Qayyūm, lā ta’khudhuhū sinatuw-wa lā nawm, lahū mā fi-s-samāwāti wa mā fi-l-arḍ, man dhā’lladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahū illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shay’im-min ʿilmihī illā bi-mā shā’, wasiʿa kursiyyuhu-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, wa lā ya’ūduhū ḥifẓuhumā wa Huwa-l-ʿAlliyu-l-ʿAẓīm.

“Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him Alone belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. (2:255)”

Reference:– Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) reported that he had a vessel in which he kept dates. He found that its quantity was decreasing. So he kept guard on it one night and saw a creature that resembled an adolescent boy. Ubayy greeted him and he returned his greeting. Ubayy then asked him: “What are you, a jinnī or a human?” He replied: “A jinnī.” So he said to him: “Show me your hand.” So he showed him his hand, and it looked like a dog’s paw with dog’s fur. He said: “This is how the jinn are created. The jinn know that there is no one amongst them who is stronger than me.” Ubayy asked him: “What made you come here?” He replied: “We heard that you are a man who loves charity, and we came to take our share from your food.’” Ubayy asked him: “What will protect us from you?” He replied: “Reading Āyah al-Kursī from Sūrah al-Baqarah [i.e. the verse above]. If you read it in the morning, you will be protected from us till the evening. And if you read it in the evening, you will be protected from us till the morning.” Ubayy said: “The following morning, Ubayy went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about what had happened. The Messenger of Allah g said: “The evil one spoke the truth.” (Ṭabarānī in Mu’jam al-Kabir 1/201)

Last two Ayah of Surah-al Baqrah: Will suffice you

Āmana-r-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi mi-r-rabbihī wa-l-mu’minūn, kullun āmana bi-l-llāhi wa malā’ikatihī wa kutubihī wa rusulih, lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadim-mi-r-rusulih, wa qālū samiʿnā wa aṭaʿnā ghufrānaka Rabbanā wa ilayka-l-maṣīr. The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His Messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination.” Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.” (2:285-6)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” (Bukhārī 4008, 807)

Surah-al Kafirun: Negation of Shirk

Qul yā ayyuha-l-kāfirūn, lā aʿbudu mā taʿbudūn, wa lā antum ʿābidūna mā aʿbud, wa lā ana ʿābidūm-mā ʿabat-tum, wa lā antum ʿābidūna mā aʿbud, lakum dīnukum waliya dīn.

Say: O disbelievers, I worship not that which you worship. And nor do you worship that which I worship. And I shall not worship that which you worship. Nor will you worship that which I worship. To you be your religion, and to me my religion. (109)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Recite [the above] then go to sleep at the end of it, for it is a disavowal of polytheism.” (Tirmidhī 3403)

Say, I seek protection of the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies. (113)

Say, I seek protection of the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the hearts of mankind, whether they be Jinn or people. (114)

Reference :- Mu’adh bin Abdullah bin Khubaib, narrated from his father (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu), who said: “We went out on a rainy and extremely dark night, looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so that he could lead us in Salat.” He said: “So I met him and he ﷺ said: ‘Speak’ but I did not say anything. Then he ﷺ said: ‘Speak.’ But I did not say anything. He ﷺ said: ‘Speak.’ So I said: ‘What should I say?’ He ﷺ said: “Recite Sūrah al-Ikhlās and al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Sūrah al-Falaq and Sūrah al-Nās) three times in the morning and the evening. It will suffice you in all respects.” (Tirmidhī 3575)

Anas (radiy Allāhū ‘anhu) reported: “There was a man from the Ansar who led them (in Salah) at Masjid Quba. Every time he was to recite a Surah for them during Salah, he would begin by reciting Sūrah al-Ikhlās until he finished, then he would recite another Surah with it. He did that in each Rak’ah. His companions talked to him and said: ‘You recite this Surah. You should either recite it or leave it and recite another Surah.’” He said: “I shall not leave it, if you would like me to lead you with it then I shall do so, and if you do not like it then I shall leave you.” And they considered him the best among them, and they did not like the idea of someone else leading them. So when the Prophet ﷺ came to them they informed him about what had happened and he ﷺ said: “O so-and-so! What prevents you from doing what your companions told you to do, why do recite this Surah in every Rak’ah” He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I love Sūrah al-Ikhlās.’ He ﷺ said: ‘Your love for it will admit you into Paradise.’” (Tirmidhī 2901)

‘These Sūrahs are extremely effective in repelling magic, evil eye, and the rest of the evils…The need for a slave to seek Allah’s protection with these Sūrahs is greater than his need for eating, drinking and clothes.’(Ibn al-Qayyim raḥimahullāh)

Tasbih, Tahmid and Takbir

Subḥāna-llāh. Alḥamdu li-llāh, Allāhu akbar.

Allah is free from imperfection. All praise be to Allah. Allah is the Greatest.

Fātimah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhā) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for a servant. He ﷺ said: “Shall I not tell you of something that is better for you than that? When you go to sleep, say: ‘Subhānallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times.’” (Bukhārī 3705)

Mercy & Protection

In Your Name my Lord, I lie down, and in Your Name, I rise. If You take my soul away then have mercy upon it, and if You return my soul then protect it with what you protect Your righteous servants with.

Abu Huraira (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When anyone of you go to bed, he should shake out his bed with the inside of his waist sheet, for he does not know what has come on to it after him, and then he should say: [the above].” (Bukhārī 6320)

Protection from Punishment

Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādak.

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants.

Hafsah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhā), the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to go to sleep, he put his right hand under his cheek and would then say [the above] three times. (Abū Dāwūd 5045)

Thank Allah for Blessing you

Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi-l-ladhī aṭʿamanā wa saqānā, wa kafānā, wa āwānā, fakam-mim-man lā kāfīya lahū walā mu’wiy.

All praise is for Allah, Who provided us food and drink and Who sufficed us and has sheltered us; for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would retire to bed, he would say [the above]. (Muslim 2715)

Protect yourself from the 4 Evils

I seek Your protection from the evil of my own self, from the evil of Shaytān and from the evil of polytheism to which he calls, and from inflicting evil on myself, or bringing it upon a Muslim.

Abu Hurayrah (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates: “Abu Bakr (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, command me with something that I may say in the morning and evening.’ He ﷺ said: ‘Say: [the above].’ (Tirmidhī 3392)

Protection from Evil and Settling of Debts

O Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Bible and the Criterion (Qur’ān); I seek Your protection from the evil of every thing You hold by the forehead. You are the First and there is nothing before You. You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Most High and there is nothing above You. You are the Most Near and nothing is closer than You; settle our debts for us and spare us from poverty.

Suhail reported that Abu Salih used to command us: “When any one of you intends to go to sleep, he should lie on the bed on his right side and then say [the above]. Abu Sālih used to narrate it from Abu Hurayra (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) who narrated it from Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Muslim 2713)

Ask Allah to Protect you from evil

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bi wajhika-l-karīm, wa kalimātika-t-tāmmati min sharri mā Anta ākhidhun bi nāṣiyatih, Allāhumma Anta takshifu-l-maghrama wa-l-ma’tham, Allāhumma lā yuhzamu junduk, wa lā yukhlafu waʿduk, wa lā yanfaʿu dha-l-jaddi minka-l-jadd, subḥānaka wa bi-ḥamdik.

O Allah, I seek protection by Your Noble Countenance and by Your perfect words from the evil of all that You hold by the forehead. O Allah, it is You who removes debt and sin. O Allah, Your army is never defeated and Your promise is never broken. The wealth of the wealthy does not avail them against You. You are free from imperfection, and to You belongs all praise.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah used to say [the above] when he retired to bed. (Abū Dāwūd 5052)

Protection, Well-being and Forgiveness

O Allah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take its life. To You Alone belongs its life and death. If You keep my soul alive then protect it, and if You take it away, then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to grant me well-being.

Abdullah b. Umar (radiy Allāhū ‘anhumā) narrates that he instructed a man to say [the above] when going to sleep. The man asked him: ‘Did you hear this from Umar?’ He replied: ‘Someone better than Umar; from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ (Aḥmad 5502)

Forgiveness & Protection

In the Name of Allah, I lie down. O Allah, forgive my sins, ward off from me my shaytān, free me from my obligations (to others) and enter me into the loftiest assembly (of angels).

Abu al-Azhar al-Anmari (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ retired to bed at night, he would say [the above]. (Abū Dāwūd 5054)

Praise Allah with the Praises of the Entire Creation

Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi-lladhī kafānī wa āwānī, al-ḥamdu li-llāhi-l-ladhī manna ʿalayya fa-afḍal, allāhumma innī as’aluka bi ʿizzatika an tunajjiyanī min-an-nār.

All praise is for Allah Who has sufficed me and given me refuge. All praise is for Allah Who has fed me and given me drink. All praise is for Allah Who has been gracious to me and showered favours on me. O Allah, I ask You by Your Glory, save me from the Hell-Fire. (Ḥākim)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever says [the above] when retiring to bed has praised Allah with all the praises of His entire creation.” (Hākim 2001)

Sleep in the name of your Lord

Allāhumma bismika amūtu wa aḥyā.

O Allah, solely in Your Name I die and I live.

Abu Dhar (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrates that whenever the Prophet ﷺ lay on his bed, he used to say: [the above], and when he woke up he would say: ‘All praise is for Allah Who gave us life after having taken it from us and unto Him is the resurrection.’ (Bukhārī 6325)

Get Forgiven before going to Sleep

Lā ilāha illā-l-lāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamd, wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh, subḥāna-llāhi wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi wa lā ilāha illā Allāhu wa-l-Allāhu akbar

There is no god but Allah. He is Alone and He has no partner whatsoever. To Him Alone belong all sovereignty and all praise. He is over all things All-Powerful. There is no power (in averting evil) or strength (in attaining good) except through Allah. Allah is free from imperfection, and all praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah and Allah is the Greatest.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever says [the above] when retiring to bed, all of his sins will be forgiven, even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea.” (Nasā’ī)

Die upon the Fitrah

Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa alja’tu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, lā malja’a wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk, āmantu bi kitābika-l-ladhī anzalt, wa bi Nabiyyika-lladhī arsalt.

O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge or safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Before you go to bed, perform wudhū as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side and say [the above]. Whoever says this and dies in his sleep, will die upon the ‘fitrah’ (natural monotheism).” (Bukhārī 6313)

In another narration the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Let the aforesaid words be your last utterance (before sleep).” (Bukhārī 247)
